Is Shopify Good for Vegan Stores?

Most of the stores above lean on the same parts of Shopify. Subscriptions matter for the food brands selling consumables people reorder (MamaSezz meal kits, Smart Pressed Juice), so a subscription app and recharge flow tend to be in the stack. The app ecosystem also handles the smaller things vegan brands care about, like surfacing third-party certifications on a product page. And for a brand like Matt & Nat that started in physical retail, adding an online channel on Shopify is less work than rebuilding on a marketplace, and the transaction fees come in under Etsy's, which counts when your margin sits on accessories or consumables.

Are Vegan Shopify Stores Profitable?

They can be. A big part of it is margin: Shopify's transaction fees come in lower than a marketplace like Etsy, so more of each sale stays with the retailer instead of going to the platform. That matters most on consumables and accessories, where the margin is already thin. Vegan brands also sit largely in health, wellness, and beauty, which is one of the stronger-selling categories on Shopify, so the demand is there to build on.

Vegan food drives the most search volume, but the category covers a lot of ground: plant-based snacks and meal kits sit alongside cruelty-free makeup, skincare, handbags, and cleaning products. On the stores above you can see that range play out: Miyoko's Creamery and Juicy Marbles are pure food plays, while Milk Makeup, Herbivore Botanicals, and Hurraw! Balm focus on cosmetics and personal care. Matt & Nat and ECOSUSI sit in the fashion and accessories lane. Cruelty-free formulation and testing has also become a baseline expectation in skincare and cosmetics, which is pushing mainstream brands toward vegan certification rather than leaving it as a niche differentiator.
