Horizon vs Dawn: Which Free Shopify Theme to Build On

Horizon vs Dawn: Which Free Shopify Theme to Build On

Build on Horizon if you are opening a store now. Stay on Dawn if you already run it, it converts, and a developer has customised it. Both themes are free and made by Shopify, and every feature on Dawn's Theme Store listing also appears on Horizon's, plus fifteen that Dawn does not list, which settles the choice for anyone starting from zero.

The argument people reach for against Horizon is that Dawn is on far more stores. That is true, and it is the weakest reason to pick a theme. Below is the adoption data, the differences a merchant actually feels, two straight recommendations, and the one check that beats both.

How many stores run each

Across the Shopify stores Koala tracks, Dawn is live on 68,958 storefronts and Horizon on 20,110, read on 5 November 2026. Dawn's installed base is nearly three and a half times Horizon's, and Dawn is the single most-deployed theme in the data.

Growth tells a different story. Over the 25 days to 5 November 2026, Horizon's count rose 14.3 percent while Dawn's rose 7.1 percent. The set of tracked themes grew 7.4 percent over that same window, so read those two figures against it rather than on their own: Horizon gained at roughly twice the rate of the pool it sits in, and Dawn grew in line with it. Horizon is taking share. Dawn is holding its own.

These are Koala's own numbers, covering the stores Koala tracks rather than a census of every shop on Shopify, and the tracked set itself grew across the window. Treat them as a large real sample of live storefronts and a direction of travel, not a market-share statistic.

What each theme is, and who ships it

Both are made by Shopify and both sit on Shopify's current list of 24 free themes.

Dawn is pitched as "a minimalist theme that lets product images take center stage." It has been Shopify's reference theme for years and is on version 16.1.1, released 2 November 2026.

Horizon is pitched as "polished design meets a clean setup: launch faster without sacrificing style," and is on version 4.4.0, released 3 November 2026. Shopify's Summer 2025 Editions release calls it "our new design foundation, harnessing the power of theme blocks for total flexibility," under the heading "One system. 10 new themes." Horizon is the base that a whole generation of Shopify themes now sits on.

Two themes maintained by the same company, both updated within a day of each other, both free. Reviews break the tie for neither: each listing sits at 36 percent positive, Dawn across 291 reviews and Horizon across 212. Theme Store ratings run harsh across the board, so an identical score on both is the useful reading.

The differences a merchant actually feels

Layout control

Dawn gives you sections. You add a slideshow, a featured collection, a rich-text block, and you arrange them. Anything the section list does not cover is a Liquid job.

Horizon gives you nested theme blocks. A section is a container, blocks go inside it, and blocks nest inside other blocks. Shopify's own copy for the Horizon collection promises "limitless flexibility with nested theme blocks and a premium, high-converting buyer experience that stands out," and the Summer 2025 release adds a generate-blocks feature that builds a custom block from a text prompt. For a merchant restructuring their own product page every few weeks, that difference is the whole job.

Conversion features

This is where the listings diverge hardest. Every feature on Dawn's listing appears on Horizon's. Horizon then lists fifteen more:

Features read from each theme's Shopify Theme Store listing on 5 November 2026.

Several of those are things merchants pay a monthly app fee for. Back-in-stock alerts, a stock counter and quick view all sit inside the free theme on Horizon, and on Dawn they do not.

Speed

Neither listing publishes a Lighthouse score, and any figure you see quoted for a theme was measured on a demo store with tidy images and no apps installed. Your own number will be lower, and the gap is almost always what you added rather than the theme you started from. Measure your live store instead, and read our guide to what counts as a good Shopify speed score before you start optimising.

How much developer time you need

Horizon's block model absorbs work that would otherwise be code. Reordering a product page, adding a size chart above the buy button, dropping a cross-sell row under the description: all editor work. Dawn handles the same layouts up to a point, and past that point you are paying someone to write Liquid.

Neither theme saves you from genuinely bespoke work. A custom product configurator or a quiz flow still needs a developer or an app on both.

Who should pick which

Pick Horizon if you are launching a new store, or rebuilding one from close to scratch, and you want conversion features without a stack of apps. You get the newer foundation, the block editor, and a feature list that is a strict superset of Dawn's. This is the default recommendation for anyone with no existing customisation to protect.

Pick Dawn if your store already runs it and converts, or if you are hiring a freelancer and want the theme with the most documentation behind it. Years of tutorials, forum answers and contractor experience assume Dawn. On a stripped-back catalogue where the photography carries the page, Dawn's plainness is the design.

You are already on Dawn. Is switching worth it?

Probably not, and the reason is arithmetic rather than loyalty.

Switch if your Dawn store is close to stock, you are adding apps to get a slide-out cart, a stock counter or back-in-stock alerts, and those app bills are recurring. Horizon gives you those for nothing, and a near-stock Dawn store is cheap to rebuild.

Stay if a developer has touched your theme. Every hour of custom Liquid in your Dawn files is an hour that does not transfer, and the upside is a feature set you can approximate with apps. Rebuild a converting store for a nicer editor and you will spend weeks finding out which small thing you forgot.

Migration risk, stated plainly

A theme switch is a rebuild, not a swap, and Shopify's own documentation shows why.

For an update to the same theme, Shopify says "any customizations made to your theme using the theme editor are copied over and applied to the updated theme." Code is a separate matter. Shopify warns that "you should always save a copy of any customized code before updating your theme," and that if your code edits conflict with the update you get "Theme added: code edits could not be included," leaving you to copy them across yourself.

Shopify also names where that code comes from: "manual code changes that have been made to your theme files in the code editor" and "automated code changes that an app which you installed on your store has made to your theme files on your behalf."

Read that second one twice. Your installed apps have written code into your current theme. A different theme does not have it. So a Dawn to Horizon move means rebuilding every template in the new editor, re-adding every app block, re-applying every code edit, and testing checkout and mobile before you publish. Build it as an unpublished theme, click through every template, and only then publish. Shopify's publish step is reversible, and the week of rebuild work in front of it is not.

The check that beats this whole comparison

Here is the part most theme guides skip. Do not pick a theme off a global popularity list. A ranking of installs across all of Shopify tells you what everyone installed, including every abandoned store and every hobby shop that never made a sale. It does not tell you what works in your category.

The stores that convert in your niche have already answered this question with money. Founders who have studied them at scale say the same thing: after analysing hundreds of stores doing over 10 million euros a year, the lifts come from offer structure, trust elements, image sequencing and page layout (r/dropshipping). Those are theme decisions in practice. Copying the theme behind a store already selling to your customer beats copying the theme behind the largest pile of installs.

Koala Inspector names the active theme on any public Shopify storefront in one click, free, including paid and custom themes, with a button straight through to that theme in the Shopify Theme Store. Open ten competitors in your category this afternoon and write down what they run. If eight of them are on a paid theme you have never heard of, that is a far better signal than a leaderboard.

That answers the question behind a low conversion rate better than any theme comparison can. You stop guessing which layout converts and start reading the layouts that already do. The same free panel lists every app a store has installed, so you see the theme and the stack behind it together.

The themes above Horizon, and what they cost

Horizon sits sixth in Koala's counts. Five themes are ahead of it, and most of that top end is paid.

ThemeLive stores in Koala's dataPrice
Dawn68,958Free, by Shopify
Trademark67,957Paid, not on Shopify's free list
Impulse23,864$500 USD, Archetype Themes
Prestige23,475$400 USD, Maestrooo
Debut20,303Free Shopify theme, no longer listed
Horizon20,110Free, by Shopify

Store counts are Koala's own data for the stores Koala tracks, read 5 November 2026. Prices are from each theme's Shopify Theme Store listing.

Add it up. Trademark, Impulse and Prestige together account for 115,296 installs in Koala's data against 89,261 for Dawn and Debut combined. Merchants who get serious about merchandising buy a theme, and they concentrate on a handful of them. That is the pattern to copy once your store earns enough that a better-merchandised page returns a one-time licence fee in a month. Our most-used Shopify themes study profiles each one, and the full ranking lives in the Shopify themes index.

For the long-form version of each free option, read our Horizon theme review and our Dawn theme review. If you are still at the top of the decision, how to choose a Shopify theme covers the ground before the shortlist.

Horizon, Dawn and Shopify questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

The questions that come up alongside a theme decision, answered straight.

Is Horizon better than Dawn?+

For a new store, yes. Every feature on Dawn's Shopify Theme Store listing also appears on Horizon's, and Horizon lists fifteen more, including a slide-out cart, pre-order, back-in-stock alerts, a stock counter, quick view, product badges and infinite scroll. Both are free and made by Shopify. Dawn's advantage is documentation: years of tutorials and freelancers assume it.

Should I switch from Dawn to Horizon?+

Switch if your Dawn store is close to stock and you are paying apps for features Horizon includes free. Stay if a developer has customised your theme, because custom Liquid does not transfer and you would rebuild every template to gain a feature set you can approximate with apps.

are shopify point of sale payments secure?+

Shopify states it is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant and that this compliance extends by default to all stores powered by Shopify. Your theme plays no part in it. Horizon and Dawn both list in-store pickups, and the payment handling itself sits with Shopify rather than with the theme.

Is Shopify a trustworthy app?+

On payment security Shopify publishes a clear position: it is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant, and it says that compliance applies to every store using the platform. That covers how card data is handled. Whether a specific Shopify store is trustworthy is a separate question, and reading the theme and apps behind a storefront is a fast way to judge how much work went into it.

has anyone experienced a drop in sales when bot add to cart activity suddenly spikes on shopify?+

What usually drops is the conversion rate rather than the sales. Bot traffic inflates sessions and add-to-carts while real orders stay flat, so the percentage falls and the revenue line does not move. Check orders against sessions you believe are human before you change anything on the page, and look at your traffic sources first. Neither Horizon nor Dawn causes this or prevents it.

looking for a premium shopify theme like prestige, impulse, or impact without paying the full price?+

There is no legitimate discount route. Prestige is $400 USD from Maestrooo and Impulse is $500 USD from Archetype Themes, both one-time. The honest substitute is Horizon, which ships a slide-out cart, quick view, a stock counter, product badges and back-in-stock alerts for nothing, and those are the features merchants usually buy a premium theme to get. Before you pay, check which theme the stores converting in your category actually run.

anyone actually running chatgpt ads for their shopify store?+

Merchants are testing it and the channel is new enough that no reliable cost benchmark exists yet, so we will not quote one. It changes nothing about this decision. Paid traffic from any source lands on your product page, and the conversion features on that page are what Horizon gives you free and Dawn does not list.

how do you manage returns and exchanges for your shopify store?+

Shopify's self-serve returns let customers submit return and cancellation requests directly from their order status page without contacting you, and they can cancel items that have not shipped. That is a Shopify setting, not a theme feature. Horizon and Dawn both list a shipping and delivery information block you can use to publish the policy where buyers read it.

Is Horizon free?+

Yes. Horizon is listed at Free in the Shopify Theme Store, made by Shopify, and appears on Shopify's current list of 24 free themes. Free themes include updates. The listing showed version 4.4.0, released 3 November 2026.
