Shopify Theme Market Share 2026: The Top 40 Themes by Store Count

Shopify Theme Market Share 2026: The Top 40 Themes by Store Count

Shopify's free default theme no longer owns the storefront market by itself. Across the Shopify storefronts Koala tracks on 2 November 2026, Dawn runs on 68,490 of them and the paid Trademark theme runs on 67,465, a gap of 1,025 storefronts, or about 1.5 percent.

That is the headline, and it reframes every theme decision below it. For years the honest answer to "what theme should I use" was "the free one Shopify gives you, because that is what everybody uses." The data now shows a paid theme matching the default almost store for store, with nine of the top twenty themes coming from outside Shopify's own catalogue.

Here is the full ranked market view, the long tail behind it, and the one theme that is growing at twice the market's rate.

Horizontal bar chart ranking the top 20 Shopify themes by number of tracked storefronts, with Dawn and Trademark almost level at the top

How to read this chart: each bar is the number of storefronts in Koala's data running that theme on 2 November 2026, so the length of the bar is deployment, not quality.

Three things in that table are worth sitting with.

The top two are effectively tied. Dawn is Shopify's own free theme, described in the Shopify Theme Store as "a minimalist theme that lets product images take center stage" (Shopify Theme Store). Trademark is not one of the 24 themes Shopify designs itself (Shopify Theme Store designer page). A free default being pushed to a photo finish by a theme merchants chose and paid for is the strongest argument in this dataset that theme choice is a real decision rather than a formality.

Half the top twenty are Shopify's own free themes. Ten of them are: Dawn, Horizon, Rise, Refresh, Origin, Publisher, Ride, Tinker, Spotlight and Savor. Those ten account for 173,573 storefronts. The nine themes from outside Shopify's catalogue account for 166,814. Debut, Shopify's retired former default, holds the remaining 20,295 and no longer appears in the Theme Store at all.

The top twenty is most of the market. Those 20 themes cover 360,682 of the 581,526 storefronts in this measurement, about 62 percent. The top ten alone cover 278,870, just under half.

Below the top ten, the market fragments fast

Outside the top ten, no theme clears 10,000 storefronts. Ella leads that group on 9,355, which is roughly a seventh of Dawn's count. By rank 40 a theme is running on about one storefront for every twenty-two that Dawn runs on.

The shape of this tail is the practical finding. A theme on 4,000 storefronts is a perfectly viable theme, and it is also a theme whose quirks almost nobody has written a tutorial for. When you pick from down here you are trading a crowd of other merchants hitting the same bugs for a layout fewer of your competitors have. Decide which of those you need more.

Two legacy names sit in this group for a reason. Debut at rank 5, plus Minimal, Brooklyn, Venture and Supply down here, are all themes Shopify retired from its Theme Store. They are still live on tens of thousands of storefronts because a working store rarely re-themes for fun. If you inherit one, expect to maintain it yourself.

Horizon is climbing about twice as fast as the market

Horizon is Shopify's newer free flagship, pitched as "polished design meets a clean setup: launch faster without sacrificing style" (Shopify Theme Store). It sits at rank 6 today, and its growth rate is the most interesting number in this study.

Between 11 October 2026 and 2 November 2026, a window of 22 days, Horizon's count in Koala's data rose from 17,593 to 19,860, a gain of 2,267 storefronts or about 12.9 percent. Over the identical window Dawn rose 6.3 percent and Trademark rose 6.0 percent.

Grouped bar chart comparing 22-day growth in tracked storefronts for Horizon, Dawn and Trademark, with Horizon at 12.9 percent against about 6 percent for the other two

How to read this chart: each bar is the percentage change in that theme's storefront count over the same 22 days, so what matters is the ratio between the bars rather than any single height.

The comparison is the whole point, and it needs saying plainly. The set of storefronts in this measurement grew over that window too, by 6.6 percent, so part of every theme's gain is simply more storefronts being counted. Dawn at 6.3 percent and Trademark at 6.0 percent are tracking that baseline almost exactly. Horizon at 12.9 percent is pulling away from it, roughly doubling the rate of the two themes above it.

What that supports is a relative claim: Horizon is gaining share. What it does not support is an absolute adoption figure for Shopify as a whole, and anyone quoting this number should carry the window and the baseline with it. Our Horizon theme review goes through what the theme actually ships with.

How to read this ranking before you pick a theme

A global ranking is the wrong tool for a theme decision, and this one is no exception. Dawn's 68,490 storefronts tell you Dawn is safe and well documented. They tell you nothing about whether Dawn converts in supplements, or whether the three stores outranking you in your niche all moved to a premium theme eighteen months ago.

The read that changes your decision is narrower:

  1. List the five to ten stores winning in your exact niche. Category leaders, the ones ranking for your money keywords, the ones whose ads you keep seeing.
  2. Check the theme each one actually runs. Not what they say in a case study, what is live right now.
  3. Look for a cluster. If four of your competitors run the same theme, that theme survived contact with your customers. If all five run something different, theme choice is not what is separating you.
  4. Then check their apps too. A storefront that feels faster or merchandises better than yours is often a theme plus three apps, and the apps are usually the cheaper half to copy.

That is a per-store question, and it takes about a minute per store. For the market-level view of what those stores have in common, our Shopify store benchmarks cover traffic, sales, app counts and app spend across the busiest stores in the same dataset, and the most-used Shopify themes report profiles each leading theme in detail.

Check any store's theme in one click

Koala Inspector is a free Chrome extension. Open any public Shopify store, click the Koala icon, and the panel names the store's active theme with a "Use Theme" link straight to that theme in the Shopify Theme Store. It names paid and custom themes, not only the free defaults.

The same panel lists every Shopify app that store has installed, grouped by what each app does, plus the store's full catalogue with likely best-sellers, its category, its product count and when it launched. All of that is free, with no token cost and no credit card.

So take any row in the tables above, or better, take the five stores beating you in your own category, and read the stack behind each one.

If you want to see what a theme reading tells you before installing anything, the free theme detector walks through it.

How we measured

What was counted. The 150 most-common Shopify themes across the Shopify storefronts Koala tracks, covering 581,526 storefronts in total. Of those, 9,447 run a theme the data could not name and are reported here only as part of that total, never inside the ranking. The counts come from signals any visitor's browser can already see on a public storefront.

When. Measured 2 November 2026. The growth comparison uses the reading from 11 October 2026 against the same measurement, a window of 22 days.

What is and is not counted. Each storefront contributes one theme, so the counts are storefronts rather than licences or downloads. This covers the storefronts Koala tracks, which is a large live sample of active Shopify merchants rather than a census of the platform, so read every figure as a count across that tracked set. The tracked set grows between measurements, which is why the Horizon section compares growth rates against Dawn and Trademark over the identical window instead of quoting an adoption share.

How to cite it. Quote the figure with its date attached, as "Koala Inspector, 2 November 2026". The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0 with credit to Koala Inspector, so you are free to reuse it.

Shopify theme and platform questions people ask

The questions that come up alongside theme research, answered straight.

Are Shopify point of sale payments secure?+

Shopify states that it is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant, that the certification covers your store, its shopping cart and web hosting, and that all stores using the platform are automatically PCI compliant by default. Level 1 is the strictest of the four PCI merchant tiers. That covers the payment plumbing on the card side. It does not cover your own operations, so staff permissions, who can issue a refund, and physical access to the terminal in the shop are still yours to lock down.

Has anyone experienced a drop in sales when bot Add to Cart activity suddenly spikes on Shopify?+

Separate the reported drop from a real one. A bot wave inflates sessions and add-to-cart events while orders stay flat, so your conversion rate falls without a single lost customer. Shopify says checkout attempts it identifies as suspected card testing or bot activity are excluded from abandoned checkouts, so part of the noise is already filtered out of that report and part is not. Check order volume and revenue in absolute terms first. If those held, you have an analytics problem. If they genuinely fell, look at the fraud prevention tools Shopify lists, including card testing protection and dynamic 3DS for stores on Shopify Payments, and at manual payment capture so you can review before funds move.

Anyone actually running ChatGPT ads for their Shopify store?+

Not many independent merchants yet, because of how the pilot opened. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the United States on the Free and Go tiers, with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts excluded, and ads matched first to the topic of the current chat thread. Adweek reported a 200,000 dollar minimum commitment for the early pilot, which puts it out of reach for most Shopify stores at this stage. Treat it as a channel to watch rather than a line in this quarter's budget.

Is Shopify a trustworthy app?+

Yes, on the measures you can check. Shopify is a public reporting company that publishes SEC and SEDAR filings, and its own investor page describes millions of merchants in more than 175 countries. On payments it states it is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant, covering every store on the platform by default. The risk that actually bites merchants is the apps and themes bolted onto a store rather than the platform underneath, which is why checking what a store runs before you copy it is worth a minute of your time.

How do you manage returns and exchanges for your Shopify store?+

Shopify handles this from the Orders page in the admin: you create a return, send shipping instructions, and issue the refund after inspecting the items. Return shipping labels with tracking are optional on a return, and an exchange sends a replacement such as a different size or colour. Customers can file their own requests from the order status page, limited to items already delivered or unfulfilled items not yet shipped. Return and cancellation rules are the setting to configure first, because they control which items are eligible and how long a customer has to ask.

Why won't Shopify let me cancel my plan?+

Four reasons account for almost every case. Only the store owner can cancel, and Shopify says that for security reasons its support team cannot deactivate a store for you. You have to sign in as that owner and clear any two-step authentication challenge. Shopify Plus stores cannot be cancelled from the admin at all and have to go through Shopify Plus Support. And pending charges are collected at cancellation, since all apps are uninstalled and any pending charges on the account are charged, which covers app usage, transaction fees and shipping labels.
