The 10 Fastest Shopify Themes 2026
January 13, 2025 · Updated June 4, 2026

A slow store costs real money. Google research found that a 0.1-second improvement in mobile load time increases retail conversions by 8%. Meanwhile, the industry average page load time sits around 7.7 seconds, but a well-chosen theme can cut that dramatically. The theme you pick is one of the few levers you control directly, without needing developers or expensive apps.
We ran Google Lighthouse tests across hundreds of themes and narrowed the results down to the 10 fastest. We also used the theme detection feature in Koala Inspector to identify which themes power real stores, so the list reflects what merchants actually use. You can detect the Shopify theme on any store for free.
What makes a Shopify theme fast?
Before the rankings, here are the actual technical factors that separate fast themes from slow ones. Knowing these helps you evaluate any theme, not just the 10 on this list.
Code quality and JavaScript handling
The biggest culprit in slow Shopify themes is JavaScript that blocks the page from rendering. Fast themes handle JS in two ways: they load it asynchronously (so a slow script doesn't freeze the whole page) and they only load the modules a feature actually needs. Themes that dump every function into one monolithic JS file will always be slower, regardless of how the marketing copy describes them.
A related issue is third-party dependencies. Every external library a theme pulls in, including jQuery, adds latency. Themes that minimize or eliminate these dependencies load faster.
Design weight
Simpler designs load faster, not because minimalism is trendy, but because fewer elements mean fewer HTTP requests and less CSS to parse. A theme with dense animations, parallax effects, and custom fonts stacked on top of each other will score poorly on Lighthouse even if the code underneath is clean.
This is part of why some free themes beat paid ones on raw speed scores. Free themes tend to ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you need the features a premium theme offers, the speed tradeoff is usually worth it, but you should know it exists.
Image handling
Images are typically the largest assets on any product page. Fast themes use:
- Lazy loading: images only load when they scroll into the viewport, not all at once on page load.
- Modern formats: WebP and AVIF compress files significantly compared to JPG/PNG with minimal visible quality loss.
- Compression built in: themes that resize and compress images on the server side rather than relying on the browser to do it.
Mobile responsiveness
Most Shopify traffic comes from mobile. A theme that scores 90 on desktop Lighthouse but 45 on mobile is not a fast theme. Our rankings use mobile Lighthouse scores because that's what affects the majority of your shoppers. The layout also needs to adapt cleanly to different screen sizes, not just shrink.
10 Fastest Shopify Themes
We tested each theme using Google Lighthouse against a real demo store. All scores are mobile Lighthouse performance scores. Scores above 90 are considered excellent; 50-89 needs improvement; below 50 is poor.

1. Eurus

Eurus scored the highest mobile speed of any theme we tested at 91/100, and it cleared all Core Web Vitals thresholds. What's notable is that it achieves this while packing in over 25 built-in app-equivalent functions, including product bundles, multi-level navigation, flash sales, and upselling. Most feature-heavy themes pay a steep speed penalty. Eurus largely avoids it by loading modules conditionally rather than shipping everything upfront.

Notable Mentions
Two themes came up regularly in our research but didn't make the final 10.
Plak
Plak markets itself as the fastest Shopify theme, citing lazy loading as the key feature. The problem is the last meaningful update was in 2020, there's no contact page, and we couldn't find any live stores running Plak in 2026 to test against. Lazy loading alone doesn't make a theme fast, and without active maintenance the theme won't keep pace with Shopify platform updates or security patches.
Booster
Booster is frequently recommended in Shopify communities and claims fast page loading alongside heavy customization. We couldn't access a working demo store to run our own Lighthouse tests, so we excluded it rather than rely on the developer's self-reported numbers. We test everything ourselves before including it.
Are paid Shopify themes faster?
Generally yes, but the relationship isn't straightforward. Paid themes scored higher on average in our testing, primarily because of better-optimized JS and more sophisticated image handling. That said, the fastest free themes (Spotlight at 79/100, Dawn at 67/100) beat several paid options. The bigger factor is how the theme handles JavaScript and media, not the price tag.
If you're choosing between a slow paid theme and a fast free one, and you don't need the premium features, the free theme will serve you better.
Are Shopify 2.0 themes faster?
Yes, meaningfully so. Shopify 2.0 introduced a more modular architecture that lets themes load only the sections active on a given page. Every theme on this list is Shopify 2.0 compatible, which is one reason they all outperform older themes. If you're on a legacy theme that predates 2.0, migrating to any of the themes above will likely improve your scores regardless of which one you pick.
Which is the fastest Shopify theme?
Eurus scored highest in our testing at 91/100 mobile Lighthouse speed. Spotlight is the fastest free Shopify theme at 79/100. Eurus passes all Core Web Vitals on mobile; Spotlight doesn't at its current 3.3s LCP, but it's significantly faster than most paid themes.
How do I speed up my Shopify theme?
Five changes make the most consistent difference:
- Compress images before uploading, or use an image compression app. Images are typically the biggest source of unnecessary page weight.
- Remove unused apps. Each active Shopify app can add scripts that load on every page, even product pages where the app does nothing.
- Switch to a lighter theme. If your current theme scores below 50 on mobile Lighthouse, a different theme will have more impact than any amount of app removal.
- Enable lazy loading. If your theme doesn't load images lazily by default, there are ways to implement it; check your theme's documentation or ask the developer.
- Use Shopify's native checkout features rather than third-party checkout tools. Third-party scripts in checkout add latency to the most conversion-sensitive step in the funnel.
You can check your current store's speed score to get a baseline before making changes.
